Last week I started playing around with a couple of teensys and was able to get DIN midi, USB Host midi and USB device midi all working together in single sketch in the first evening. My goal being to build a poly with sequencer.

I've got a few on the way to me and I'm hoping to do something neat with them. I think there's a lot of interest in it, in part because it's from raspberry, but also because of some of the neat features like the PIO, so I think eventually there'll be lots of examples of all kinds of things using it. If you have some experience and are willing to figure some stuff out yourself (by diving into the chip datasheets) instead of relying on finding existing examples, it would probably be a fine sequencer platform. So maybe the above dev environment criticism isn't entirely applicable, but the resources criticism still holds true (though diminishingly so as time goes by). Programming it with CircuitPython or whatever it's called sounds easy enough, and might be just fine for a sequencer, depending on just how much you want to push it, though. So I don't think it's a good starting point.

Eventually, the Arduino environment will probably be supported (if it isn't already? I haven't checked in a few days), since Arduino plans to release a microcontroller using the same chip, and that'll be pretty beginner friendly. Similarly, there's not as much dev environment support, so depending on your computer platform and preferences, you might end up needing to run some not-necessarily-beginner-friendly command line programs in order to compile for and program it. It's a brand new microcontroller so there aren't as many resources out there for help as there are with other popular microcontrollers. I'd say no, it's not a good starting point. Would the new RPI Pico be a good starting point now too? Teensy you'd have a better chance to brute force something than under Linux if need be. If not I'd stay with the Teensy since real time Linux can be tricky if you don't know the OS. If you are a Linux programmer and understand real time Linux then maybe a PI would be a good choice for you. Again not all libraries are good so use with caution. Even though I don't like it it is a good place for beginners to start since it's simple and there are a lot of libraries available.

So look at the code and be picky about what you use.Įven though I think it's the worse programming environment out there there is support for the Teensy (and maybe Daisy) in the Arduino environment. That being said there is a lot of bad code out there and some good code. There might be some code you could use as a base or use as a reference to start with. You're doing this now but I'd do an internet search and see what is out there already for these platforms. I can't say what is the best programming environment because I was a HW/SW embedded engineer when I worked.
